Rhodium is one of the six platinum group metals, along with platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium. Due to its rarity in nature and wide range of applications, it is one of the most expensive metals.
As one of the leading companies in the precious metals industry, Heraeus processes rhodium and rhodium alloys in various products and applications.
Rhodium is primarily used as a chemical catalyst in exhaust gas purification systems for combustion engines in vehicles and industrial plants. It is often used in combination with platinum or palladium as an alloy to reduce nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases.
In addition, galvanic processes can be used to create very hard and chemically stable rhodium coatings. Due to its shiny and corrosion-resistant properties, rhodium is particularly suitable for enhancing the appearance of jewelry, headlights, and mirrors. Other potential applications include high-stress heating coils or thermocouple wires made of platinum-rhodium alloys, which are used for precise temperature measurement in the steel, glass, and ceramic industries. Moreover, platinum-rhodium alloys are used to produce stir cells, stirrers, plungers, and feeder systems, which are then used in the manufacturing of optical and technical glasses. Additionally, glass fiber nozzles are manufactured from platinum-rhodium alloys.
Heraeus also offers the processing of products and applications containing rhodium, as well as the recovery of rhodium through melting or precious metal recycling.
In addition to the rhodium-containing products and applications mentioned above, Heraeus offers a comprehensive range of products related to the precious metal rhodium. For full information on our product portfolio, please refer to the corresponding resources.
